2.4: The name of the survey is in English. The native language translation has been provided by the individual who compiled metadata for this record. 2.5: The survey covered 11 Member States (those listed in 2.5 plus the country corresponding to this record) and these countries were strategically chosen. Specifically, they were chosen because of the notable proportion of Roma in the population and the assumption that in most of these countries the Roma were living in a high concentration in specific areas (which was a necessary condition for employing probability sampling given the resource and time constraints). Moreover, in seven of these 11 countries (i.e. Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) had already gained experience in interviewing the Roma via its EU-MIDIS I survey.

Representative of the population: Yes
Sample design - full information: Random route, focused enumeration, and systematic sampling were used for sampling the Roma respondents, whereas just random route was used for the non-Roma respondents. For random route, interviewers started from designated starting points, following precise instructions for their route. The interviewers were required to apply a sampling step of five, where they make contact with the household in every fifth dwelling unit. As needed, the random route rules were adapted to circumvent particular challenges faced by the interviewers. As for focused enumeration, it was then used to supplement random route to increase the chances of identifying eligible households of the hard-to-reach population. Specifically, interviewers asked respondents in households already included in the sample to provide information on the eligibility of surrounding households. Two dwellings on either side of the initial household were then screened for the presence of eligible Roma households. Based on the information received, the interviewer had to determine whether there are eligible persons at the adjacent addresses. Finally, for systematic sampling, interviewers applied the systematic sampling approach only when the number of identifiable Roma dwelling units was too small to realistically complete the planned number of interviews by selecting every fifth household through the random route approach.

<notes subject="sampling method">4.4: The available documentation does not specify the sampling frame(s) used. However, it mentions the following: (a) sampling frames for the survey were developed using information collection during background research; the collected information was then used to construct sampling frames by establishing lists of primary sampling units (which varied from country to country). (b) In each country, the sampling frame was intended to reflect the diversity of the Roma groups in terms of community size and geographic distribution so that the survey results would be representative of their situation.</notes>
<notes subject="sample size">5.1-5.8: The information in this section refers to the sample size of the survey as a whole and that information about the sample size of the subgroups in which the survey is partitioned can be found in section 6. 5.1: In order to achieve the agreed net sample size, the contractor planned each country’s fieldwork to accommodate a bigger gross sample size, so that in the end it would have a sufficient number of interviews available for analysis even after normal survey nonresponse and non-contact. 5.2: The sample size reported in the documentation refers to individuals/ households surveyed (as only one respondent was interviewed in each household). These respondents provided information about a total of 6,818household members (5,449 Roma and 1,369 non-Roma) through the household grid (as reported by the respondent). 5.3: Response rate is provided by the data distributor for each survey sub-group (see section 6) and not for the overall survey sample</notes>
<notes subject="data collection">7.2: FRA developed the survey questionnaire, which Gallup Europe and its national fieldwork agencies then translated and used in face-to-face interviews in the different participating countries. The available documentation however does not specify if the face-to-face interviews were PAPI or CAPI. 7.8: The average duration/length of the interview varied by subgroup (Roma = 35, Non-Roma =31). 7.9: The figure listed reflects the total number of questions found in the Roma questionnaire; this can be considered as the "full" questionnaire as the non-Roma questionnaire is exactly the same as the Roma questionnaire with just some questions removed and with some slight wording changes.</notes>

<notes subject="general identification information">1.4: The name of the survey is in English. The native language translation has been provided by the individual who compiled metadata for this record. 1.9: Per the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the survey can be considered representative of the Roma living in areas where they reside in greater density than the national average in a given country. As for the non-Roma sample of this survey, the survey can be considered representative of the non-Roma persons living in or near areas where Roma live in greater density than the national average of a given country; as such, the non-Roma sample is not representative of the general population of a given country (as reflected in the averages of national statistics). 1.15: Respondents were 16 years old and older.</notes>
<notes subject="any other comments">(1) In 2011, two parallel and complementary Roma-targeted surveys were carried in the EU. The first survey, the Regional Roma 2011 survey (its unique ID in the EMM Survey Registry is RRS2011) was undertaken by the UNDP and the World Bank; the second survey, the Roma pilot survey 2011 (which corresponds to the survey covered in this record) was undertaken by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). To facilitate access to information about these two surveys, the report, The situation of Roma in 11 EU Member States (https://fra.europa.eu/sites/default/files/fra_uploads/2099-FRA-2012-Roma-at-a-glance_EN.pdf), was produced; specifically, this report covers results and findings from these two surveys. (2) The survey methodology developed and used in the Roma pilot survey 2011 was a collaborative effort involving experts and partners specializing in Roma research. As such, the view of FRA is that the methodology for this survey can be used as a guide for future data collection efforts aimed at studying the situation of Roma in the EU.</notes>
