Sampling frames for the Roma population were non-existent in Bosnia and Herzegovina until 2009 when the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina conducted an enumeration of Roma in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of activities within the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015.This wave of MICS is therefore the first of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as previous MICS waves targeted the general population. In other words, the Roma sample size is unknown in the previous MICS waves

Representative of the population: Yes
Sample design - full information: A one-stratified sample was designed. In each of the three administrative units in Bosnia and Herzegovina, municipalities were identified as the main stratum of the sample, in which the primary sample unit was a household. Five municipalities were excluded from the sample because each of them included only one household with Roma population. The results of the research are representative for the remaining 62 municipalities (in which more than one household lives) for which there was a sample frame. All households where the head of household declared himself or herself to be of Roma ethnicity were considered as Roma households. In each stratum (municipality), a certain number of households were selected, in proportion to the size of the strata defined during the previous survey conducted in 2009. Number of Roma households assigned to each the sample based on the sample was randomly chosen with the same probability. During fieldwork, listed are Roma households in the area of the municipality in the sample, and this updated information on the size of each strata is reflected in weightings. Field teams have been informed that many households members have left the country from 2009 until the moment when the fieldwork was conducted. In order to ensure the definition of random (randomized) household choices, based on the sample size, by random selection, the specified ’starting point’ and ’endpoint’ of the reference interval are determined. Based on the date of birth of the household holder, a selection of households was conducted within each strata. Only those households where the householder date of birth was between “the starting point” and “the end point” were surveyed. In this way, a total is selected 1,791 Roma households, including 542 households with children under the age of five and 1,249 households without children under five years of age
