      <notes subject="inclusion in a large survey">
CILS4COVID is a one-off add-on survey to the longer-running CILS4EU-DE survey. The CILS4EU-DE survey itself is a continuation of (though independent from) the CILS4EU survey, which was conducted in four countries (England, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden). CILS4EU-DE continues the German part of the CILS4EU panel after the end of CILS4EU harmonized data collection in 2013. The other three country teams also conducted follow-up studies, but they are no longer harmonized like they were for CILS4EU waves 1-3. The sample issued for CILS4COVID is the current ‘active’ sample of CILS4EU-DE, meaning that the respondents of CILS4COVID have been part of the panel at least since wave 1 of CILS4EU-DE (which the data producers call wave 4). As such, the start date of wave 1 of CILS4EU-DE is listed in 2.6, since this is, in essence, the earliest date to which the specific respondents included in CILS4COVID can be traced within CILS4EU-DE. In 2.8, however, the number listed corresponds to the wave number for CILSCOVID only.

Sample design - full information: The sampling design differed between the initial panel sample of students drawn in 2010 and the refreshment sample, to counteract panel attrition, that was added in 2016. Initial panel: In the first stage, schools enrolling grades with mainly 14-year-old students were sampled proportionally based on their size. Prior to sampling, schools in the sampling frame were assigned to mutually exclusive groups (explicit strata) according to the proportion of proportion of Non-German nationals in the schools. Schools from higher strata (i.e. with a higher proportion of Non-German nationals) were oversampled. At the second stage, two classes with mainly 14-year-old students were randomly sampled per school. Lastly, all students of the sampled classes were part of the sample (exceptions: intellectually or functionally disabled students, students with insufficient German skills to fill out the questionnaire). One parent per student as well as the form teacher(s) of the sampled classes were also interviewed. Refreshment sample: In the first stage, municipalities were sampled stratified by administrative district with probability proportional to size where size refers to the number of residents from the birth cohorts 1994 to 1996. In the second stage, people were sampled from the residents’ registration office registers of the sampled municipalities. Before the sampling procedure, residents were assigned a presumed background (native/immigrant) based on their first and last name. People with a presumed migration background were oversampled. For Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, no address information was available. Therefore, it was not represented in the refreshment sample.

    <notes subject="general identification information">Why was this survey coded as representative in 1.9? This survey uses multistage disproportionate stratified cluster sampling, during which there was a) an oversampling of people with a migration background and b) the exclusion of one German federal state (see also 4.3). Therefore, while the survey is not truly representative of the population unweighted, weights are provided (in wave 6 of CILS4EU-DE) to adjust for the probability to be included in the sample. Why are so few topics listed under 1.13 included in the questionnaire? This survey was conducted in parallel with the regular CILS4EU-DE wave 8 data collection. The regular wave 8 questionnaire contained questions on many of the topics listed under 1.13. Since more than 95% of CILS4COVID participants also participated in CILS4EU-DE wave 8, data on these topics are available for most of the CILS4COVID respondents in the wave 8 data.</notes>

    <notes>Migrant/minority related questions were asked were asked in wave 1 of the CILS4EU study for respondents who are part of the initial panel and wave 3 of the CILS4EU-DE study (referred to as “wave 6” by data producers) for respondents who entered the panel as part of the refreshment sample added in 2016. Because the CILS4COVID sample was recruited from respondents of the CILS4EU-DE panel, CILS4COVID can be merged with data from these earlier waves to obtain information on the topics listed under 3.4. Specifically, information is available about the country of birth of respondents, the country of birth of parents, the country of birth of grandparents, and the nationality of respondent (current). In addition to this, information about the nationality of parents (current) and ethnic self-identification of parents is available in wave 1 of the CILS4EU survey for respondents whose parents filled out the CILS4EU wave 1 parent questionnaire. // While CILS4COVID did not target specific migrant groups, the largest number of people with a migration background in the sample were those with a migration background from Turkey, Poland, Russia, and Italy.</notes>
