Sample design - full information: In the first stage, schools enrolling grades with mainly 14-year-old students were sampled proportionally based on their size (exclusions: schools for students with learning disabilities). Prior to sampling, schools in the sampling frame were assigned to mutually exclusive groups (explicit strata) according to the proportion of proportion of Non-Dutch nationals in the schools. Schools from higher strata (i.e. with a higher proportion of Non-Dutch nationals) were oversampled. At the second stage, two classes with mainly 14-year-old students were randomly sampled per school. Lastly, all students of the sampled classes were part of the sample (exceptions: intellectually or functionally disabled students, students with insufficient Dutch skills to fill out the questionnaire).

<notes subject="sample size">5.8: Please note that the weights are not included in the CILS4EU wave 3 data set itself, but in the CILS4EU wave 1 data set. The CILS4EU data package includes both of these data sets and weights can easily be merged with the wave 3 data. 5.1-5.8: Section 5 provides the sample size information for the survey as a whole. Section 6 is where the EMM-specific sample size information (as well as all other subgroups) can be found.</notes>
<notes subject="data collection">The EMM target population also included 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants to the Netherlands. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the native language of at least part of this group is Dutch. Since the questionnaire was provided to all respondents in Dutch, 7.4 and 7.6 have been coded as "Yes" and 7.5 and 7.7 has been coded as "Dutch". The questionnaire included a total of 80 questions. Due to filtering and differences between the modes, the number of items that respondents provided answers to varied.</notes>

<notes subject="general identification information">Why was this survey coded as representative in 1.9? This survey uses multistage disproportionate stratified cluster sampling, during which there was an oversampling of people with a migration background. Therefore, while the survey is not truly representative of the population unweighted, weights are provided (in wave 1 of CILS4EU) to adjust for the probability to be included in the sample. As part of the main topic "1.13.24. Social cohesion and/or civic engagement and/or networks", classroom networks, friendships, and romantic relationships were covered.</notes>
