Representative of the population: Yes
Sample design - full information: Multi-stage stratified probability sampling design. 720 postcode sectors were selected as the Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) + 468 PSUs for child boost. Before selection, postcode sectors were stratified in order to maximise the precision of the sample. Postcode sectors with fewer than 500 PAF (Postal Address File) addresses (‘delivery points’) were combined with neighbouring sectors before selection to avoid undue clustering of sampled addresses. Two stratification levels were used in the selection of PSUs. Postcode sectors were first sorted by Local/Unitary Authority, ensuring correct regional balance. Within each Local Authority, sectors were listed in order of the percentage of households with a head of household in a non-manual occupation (Socio-Economic Groups 1-6, 13). The data used to classify postcode sectors by the proportion of household heads in non-manual occupations was taken from the 1991 Census of Population, as 2001 Census data were not yet available at the time of sample selection. 720 sectors were then selected systematically, with each postcode sector having a probability of selection proportional to its total number of addresses. Once selected, the PSUs were systematically allocated between the different months of the year, with 60 PSUs being assigned to each month. This was done so that fieldwork conducted in each quarter of the year was carried out with a fully representative sub-set of the total sample
