Sample design - full information: A random sample of recent migrants to Ireland was extracted from an anonymised dataset, pre-stratifying by gender, age cohort, nationality and length of time in Ireland (length of time in Ireland was also proxied by the number of work permits issued to an individual (1, 2, 3, or 4 or more)). Only current work permit holders who had relatively recently come to Ireland from South/Central Africa, North Africa, Asia and non-EU East European countries were included. Asylum seekers questionnaires were simply sent to Direct Provision Centres. The managers of the centres were asked to distribute one sealed pack to each household and to explain that one adult (aged 18 years or more) in each family should complete and return a questionnaire in the language of their choice. Randomisation was done based on the demographic characteristics of respondents by applying the simple “next birthday” randomisation rule

Description: Work Permit holders: A minimum loss algorithm was used to reweight the Work Permit portion of the sample using information about the distributional characteristics of the Work Permit holder population in Ireland derived from the administrative list of Work Permit holders which constituted the sampling frame. The variables that were used are as follows: gender (2 categories); age cohort (5 categories); nationality (18 categories); and number of permits issued (4 categories). Asylum seekers: The Asylum Seeker portion of the sample was reweighted according to the aggregate statistics of the characteristics of residents in the reception centres from which they were sourced. These variables were gender and age
